Art in AI-motion: a mini lesson using Artificial Techology

I have designed a mini lesson meant to be an interdisciplinary lesson among English, Music, Visual Arts and Technology using IA support. You will find that it can easity be adapted to any level.

The lesson deals with emotions, shapes, music  and the artistic experience through the works of Vassily Kandinsky. The lesson includes the use of  different Artificial Intelligence apps, free and really easy to use: Music Lab, google Arts, Mentimeter or Genially.

You can find the mini lesson attached and I hope you can use, adapt o inspire you.

Clilck on the picture or in the link to access to the full lesson.

Language Teaching Through Art

Here is a great webite which gives ideas on how to use art in the classroom.

Look, Don't Touch!

 Please don't touch the artwork!

Now and then, we are reminded as to why these signs are still needed in galleries around the world.

Art lovers in Miami, USA, looked on in horror when a collector accidentally knocked a $42,000 ( 39,445 euros) sculpture by US pop artist Jeff Koons to the ground.

According to the first reports, she had tapped it with her finger, witnesses at the even said. Later reports said she kicked the podium where it was placed. Hmmm.... either way, the best rule is to stay CLEAR of anything of great value or breakable, don't you think?

You may remember this story from some years ago:

PAINT YOUR PET

Did you ever want to paint your pet? Here's a great hack for transfering the outline makes that part so easy! No drawing! Here, artist @andrea.nelson.art used her tropical watercolor palette and brushes on watercolor paper.  Any color and most brushes will work. Have fun!

Now you and your students can try painting any creature that would be quite a difficult task otherwise.

POP SURREALISM

Yesterday I visited the exhibition of an American artist in Valladolid. His name is Mark Ryden. He is a surrealist painter. His art movement is called “lowbrow” or “pop surrealism”. He was obsessed with some characters and objects that appear on most of his pictures. For example: God, Abraham Lincoln, and also elephants, rabbits, bees and meat.

In the school we are going to make a project about bees and I would like my students draw: “Queen Bee” or “the veil of bees”

Mark tackled also a new medium:  theater. He designed the customs and accessories of the   performance “Whipped cream”.

and Mary Marsell replies:

It's also really fabulous that you're taking it a step further and incorporating his art into your classroom focus on bees. I love bees, as maybe you do, too, from what you said.
Two Bee things for you:
The timeless novel, The Secret Life of Bees (I can't recommend it enough!)
The online site, Another day saving the bees!" #bees #beekeeper #fyp #tiktok #amazing #nature #learnontiktok #austin #texas".

STREET POETRY

Afrose Fatima Ahmed is a traveling poet who, along with her trusty typewriter, has traveled across the contiguous United States in pursuit of an idea of home. Born out of grief after a personal tragedy, Afrose’s project—”Poem Store,” impromptu typewritten poetry for strangers—is an opportunity to connect with other people in a common quest for belonging.

Teaching prepositions of place through art

Here is an activity that I did when I worked in a summer camp in 2015. You give your students sentences that contain prepositions of place. They have to draw the sentences and put the objects in the correct place. I have placed three examples below.

ART CHALLENGE

The Getty Museum in Los Angeles, California asked art lovers to post picture of themselves recreating their favorite works of art from the comfort of their own home. They were to recreate art with everyday things and the results were brilliant.

Have fun seeing what they came up with! How would you recreate with YOUR favorite work of art?

SIX-WORD MEMOIRS

Shared by Shawn Redwood:

"Six-Word Memoirs® is a simple way to engage and inspire anyone and everyone to get to the essence of who they are and what matters most."

https://www.sixwordmemoirs.com/

You can use this as a lesson in your English Classroom. There are plenty of examples and prompts on the website. It is best to start out with examples to model what is expected of your students.

Show your students a picture or a work of art and have them describe it in six words. Give them a minute to write their sentence. You can even use a prompt.

Students will be challenged by this because they are used to writing long sentences. I have placed examples below from a PowerPoint I used in my teacher training sessions. I wrote the sentences for each picture.

I normally give them the art or photo. I use it as a way to start class and get students thinking about the topic.

You can use it any way you wish. The beauty about this is that you can adapt it in class and put a spin on it. It also works with prompts. Look at the example below.

Shared by Santos Suárez:

I would like to share a recent study showing why integrating visual arts into English teaching can be a particularly appropriate and rewarding strategy.

It is a brief article that offers an overview of how this topic has been investigated as well as the main conclusions that can be derived from the research carried out.

Although it does not offer didactic suggestions (as the ones provided in this blog) on how to carry out this integration of the visual arts in language teaching, it offers arguments to understand why it is important to contemplate the integration of art in the teaching and learning process of a foreign language.

Palimpsest, by Doris Salcedo. Talking about migration in the Mediterranean

Shared by Santos Suárez:

Taking advantage of the fact that in the Unit an exercise deals with the work of the Colombian artist Doris Salcedo, I would like to share a video about one of her works I find particulary interesting.

I´m referring to her work "Palimpsest" that was exhibited in Madrid a few years ago. It tackles a terrible issue (dead inmigrants in the Mediterranean) in a surprising and poetic way.

A good example of the ways in which art helps us reflect on social problemas and on ourselves.

Glass ceiling for B2 learners

Shared Ana Isabel Torres:

I am sending you an old video by a Mexican video-artist , Teresa Serrano, dealing with the topic of gender discrimination.

The title is  'Glass ceiling' (Teresa Serrano,2008) and  I have used it with B2 students to introduce the topic and try to make them think about the possible causes and consequences for this unfair situation.

Getting to know a place through its murals

Mary Lynn Marsell presents Lompoc, on the California central coast, with a population of about 40.000 people.

The Lompoc Mural Society has many events inspiring art on building walls, some done by students and others by well-known artists.  I especially love the Mural in a Day event that takes place each year.

Scroll down on this link to see that fabulous walls that have been painted and that I'm seeing around town!

https://www.lompocmurals.com/gallery/mural-in-a-day/

Check out the home page and see all the wonderful art.
Be sure to go to Murals, where you can also see the Retired Mural and Commissioned Murals as well. They're fabulous!

https://www.lompocmurals.com/

Street Murals have become  a way not only to decorate villages and cities around the world, but also a reason to visit them and understand their culture. Murals are a great way to introduce students to them and intorduce creativity as a means of expression at school.
